Are you looking for a way to take your online sales to the next level? If so, you may want to consider professional flat-lay photography. Flat-lay photography is a style of photography that involves taking pictures of items from a top-down perspective. Use flat-lay photography for various product categories, from clothes to food to home decor.

One of the benefits of flat-lay photography is that it can make products look more appealing and desirable. When customers see products that are well-lit and photographed from an attractive angle, they are more likely to want to purchase them.

Clients should participate in a Flat-lay Photography PhotoshootToronto Flat-Lay and Over-Top Camera Photography Studio

When we do flat-lay photography at Jules Design, we prefer if the Client participates in the photo shoot. It is better when the Client participates because you may want to input some creative decisions as we produce the images; moreover, some clients have some particular staging requirements. When we stage the flat-lay product photos, we can view our work from a large screen monitor to produce images that match our creative vision.

How do we deliver the Flatlay Photographs to the customer?

When we do flat-lay product photos, we photograph the product from overtop and trace out the background. The new background of the flat-lay product photo is pure white or on a transparent Photoshop layer. Since we use our images for various marketing applications, our photos are used in print, eCommerce websites and sometimes on billboards. To facilitate the customer’s creative process, we deliver the product photos in five business days or less in the following formats:

  1. High-Resolution JPG
  2. Web-Resolution JPG
  3. Web-Resolution PNG with a transparency Layer
  4. High-Resolution TIF with a transparency Layer

When we edit out flat-lay product photos, we often apply a translucid (semi-transparent) shadow on the edge and circumference of the product photo to add depth and realism to the product image.

How much does Flat-lay Photography Cost?

$125 per hour + HST. When we do flat-lay photography, we charge an hourly rate. We prefer to charge an hourly rate because the project scope can increase or decrease – and if we are charging by the hour, it doesn’t matter if the project grows or shrinks.

Why is Flatlay photography good for branding and positioning?

Flat-lay photographs can be very effective at positioning your brand. You can stage the product with props to relate the product to other marketing categories or demographics.  If you are interested in using flat-lay photography to boost your online sales, we can help. We offer professional flat-lay photography services that can help you increase your conversion rate and drive more sales. Contact us today to learn more.

Applications for Flatlay photography

At Jules Design, we use flat-lay photography to produce marketing photos for a variety of different product categories, including:

Flatlay Food Photography

Food photos shot from over-top are strategically effective in selling more products. Food photos in a flat-lay format, such as pizza, communicate the pizza’s content and its deliciousness. We often also use flat-lay product photos to demonstrate a montage of food items. These photos are helpful to brand a product to convey the product’s content or lifestyle context,

Flatlay food pictures are often used on Social Media to position the company or brand in the consumer’s mind. Alternatively, use flat-lay food photography to produce product packaging graphics. Because the camera is overtop, the camera has a wide field of view to photograph the item and any related props.

Flatlay food photos can be speedy to produce or very time-consuming. Food Photos with elaborate staging can take a while to set up, and since time is money, complex images can cost more to produce.

Flatlay Carpet Photography + Door Flatlay Photography

We do extensive amounts of carpet photography here. We do so much flat-lay carpet and door photography we mounted a camera into our ceiling. We use this setup to photograph rugs, doors, car accessories and more. We impose these images into stock photos when we produce flat-lay carpet and door photos. Preparing lifestyle photos this way is a fast and inexpensive method to create convincing lifestyle product photos without the cost or effort of going onsite to produce content.

Flatlay Amazon Product Photography

Flat-lay photography is an intelligent approach to producing product photos for e-commerce marketing. It is an attractive, often inexpensive, and practical method to present merchandise. As mentioned earlier, with props, a flat-lay product photo is great for branding or positioning a product in the customer’s mind.

What’s in the box product shots.

Some products include many components. With a flat-lay product photo, a single picture can present all the parts included in one image to give the customer a clear expectation of all the details in a specific order. Being transparent with customers by communicating the items they will receive with a particular order helps manage expectations and reduce costly product returns.

Use Flatlay Photography to photograph very two-dimensional products

Some products like plastic bags or paper are best presented flat in a photo. Flat-lay photography is the fastest and easy method to photograph products when a product is flat, and the camera is mounted overtop.

Fashion Photography

Fashion Photography is the most well-known and popular form of flat-lay photography. Since customers often have unique ways to present their merchandise, we encourage our clients to participate in the production of their flat-lay photos. Customers prefer this approach as many have a specific idea of what they want. We like that too. Clients are happier with the input when they are involved in their product photoshoots because they are part of the creative process. We also appreciate that because it saves us from needing to re-photograph the product.

Is Flatlay the only way to photograph merchandise?

As a commercial photographer, flat-lay photography is one of many styles and methods to present merchandise. Sometimes it is the best way to produce product photographs; sometimes, it is not. Flat-lay product photos often complement a series of conventional images. Flatlay images do not always make a hero image. Think of a hamburger; a burger looks best from the angle of view (POV 45⁰), not from a directly overtop perspective.

How do I proceed to get flat-lay product photos of my merchandise?

Call us and tell us about your project. We can assess your needs and provide creative ideas, direction, instructions, photography and editing services. When you are ready to start your shoot, give us some ideal target dates, and we will schedule a photo shoot with you in our studio. On project completion, we will provide you with the images as graphic design-ready files ready for marketing use.

Colour accuracy and Flatlay Photography

At Jules Design, we have a colour-managed workflow. A colour-managed workflow means we have tools to measure the colour and intensity of the light. With this workflow, we have the controls in place to produce very colour-accurate images.

Flat-lay is a specific style of photography where products are arranged on a flat surface to create still or video images. We use flat-lay photography often for marketing and e-commerce purposes. Our team of professional photographers is also skilled in flat-lay photography. If you need product or flat-lay photography, please get in touch. We’d be happy to discuss your needs and provide a proposal.
